As Salaamualikum Dear Parents,
Welcome to Westfall Academy.
Westfall Academy is a fulltime Islamic School in Brighton NY. Alhamdulillah, three years ago we moved into the newly expanded building. Our classrooms are filled with resources and bustling with activity. The biggest attraction at Westfall Academy is the small number of students per class. Most of our teachers are certified and those not certified are in the process of completing their degree in education and become certified. The total number of students is 104 in grades pre-K-6th. The subjects taught are Quran, Islamic Studies, English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Computer Usage, Arabic Language and Art.
Westfall Academy offers an excellent venue to teach your child his/her deen. With difficult times coming up as our children grow up in America, it is essential that they know Islam for what it is; a way of life that is rooted in the Quran, and sunnah of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him). At Westfall Academy our students start to pick up Arabic vocabulary, short suras and duas from the Quran and Sunnah at a very early age of 3.
Our Pre-K includes students of ages 3 and 4 in Level I and Level II. The curriculum revolves around 4 centers (ELA, math numbers, Arabic and art) where students work in small groups with the teachers. Daily morning circle time allows all of the students to participate in a whole class format. At the circle time the teachers share Big Book stories, daily calendar, weather etc. There is also plenty of time for games and play in our huge Gym! We have three full time teachers in pre-K.
In Kindergarten class the students are always busy doing lots of hands on activities. The focus on Kindergarten is Alphabet sound, developing phonemic awareness, number sense. They have lots of fun doing science projects and experiments! In Quranic studies they start with Alphabet recognition, proper pronunciation of each sound and where they reside in the mouth, and throat. They also learn basic suras and hadith. By the end of Kindergarten most of our students start reading the Quran.
In grades 1-5th the curriculum gets more intense. 1st graders are busy working at reading centers, using math manipulatives to understand addition and subtraction concepts, place value, money and time are all introduced systematically in 1st grade. In Quran students are introduced to tajweed and are expected to use the science of tajweed when reading the Quran. 2nd through 5th grade are busy improving on their reading, comprehension and writing skills. As the grades get higher the students are given grade level materials. All of our students do daily journal dialogue, creative writing using prompts, and are provided with various genre reading.
In grades 2nd- 6th Westfall Academy teaches core curriculum such as ELA, Math Science and Social Studies through Team Teaching. For more information please look for the document on our website detailing Team Teaching.
Our students participate in state tests such as NYSESLAT (K-5th) ELA (3rd -4th) State Math (3rd-5th). The teachers also do DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) twice a year.
Field trips, annual science fair and Ummah celebration all adds to the process of learning for our students.
